1. A Border Terrier must be capable of being spanned by a man's hands behind the shoulder. SPANNABILITY is essential.
2. He must possess a head that resembles an otter's head, that is neither coarse, snipy of muzzle or excessive in stop.
3. He is a small, long legged terrier who is expected to be capable of going to ground and also following a horse. When in doubt about size check spannability.
4. He has an appearance that suggests endurance and agility with a narrow, deep fairly long body and racy hindquarters.
5. He has a harsh, dense close fitting coat with a thick, loose pelt that enables him to escape tight underground spaces.
