WITBY BORDER TERRIERS

Breed Information

The Border Terrier originates from the Border counties between Scotland and England. Most of the breed's development took place in Roxburghshire on the Scottish side and in Northumberland on the English side of the border with Cumberland also playing some part. The rough, hilly terrain produced a purpose built dog with a small wiry body, a harsh weatherproof coat and a problem solving brain.

Border Terriers were bred to work, often alongside a foxhound pack. They are expert at going to ground, able to investigate areas too small for the foxhound. The working Border was expected to bolt the fox in its lair and be able to follow the horse while hunting. They are a breed with a lot of stamina and athleticism. These robust, little dogs hold a sociable, intelligent attitude to life. As a breed they are popular in the UK but remain a well kept secret in Australia.

The Border Terrier is a small, long legged terrier. He stands approximately 14 inches tall (35cm) and weighs from 5.1 to 7.1 kilos, (11.5 to 15.5lbs). He has a distinctive head that resembles an otter's and a harsh double coat that requires a seasonal tidy up.

He is a loyal companion to all family members and does not suit long periods of isolation. He is long lived with an expected lifespan of 13 to 15 years. His size suits travel and he is comfortable with car, boat and plane travel.
